SUMMER DREAMS

Summer is around the corner.... every time I think of it I get excited.... I have lots of plans for the summer. Let me tell you.

I think I am going to travel along the Mediterranean coast during the month of July. I will travel by car with my husband and baby and maybe a couple of friends. We will stop at small hotels close to the beach and make picnics at night. It is possible that we will visit some old castles and churches and take lots of photos.

Maybe we will return to Almería after a few weeks and I will probably take my girl to a swimming school. We will go to the beach every day and I am sure we are going to have a great time. In my free time I am going to read many books and go to fun places with our friends, like the Aquarium and the Water park. But I also have to do some work around the house, like painting and repairing some furniture. I don´t think I will enjoy that.

What are your summer plans? Whatever they are, I hope you have a great time?

Swine Flu

Swine Flu Deaths Expected To Rise

Health officials from around the world have warned that swine flu may cause more deaths. Nearly 150 people have died so far in Mexico. There are fears that this death toll will rise, and that people will start dying in other countries. There are already around 2,000 reported cases of the virus in Mexico. Countries as far away as New Zealand, Spain, Canada and Scotland have also reported outbreaks. U.S. health officials have warned American citizens that there could be fatalities in the USA. Dr. Richard Besser of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters: "From what we understand in Mexico, I think people need to be ready for the idea that we could see more severe cases in this country and possibly deaths."

Health organizations everywhere are preparing for a pandemic. Scientists say the virus has not been seen before. This means there is not yet a vaccine against it. Dr. Besser warned it was not easy to predict how serious the virus is. He explained: “Outbreaks of infectious diseases are extremely unpredictable and variable, and so over time, what we say about this and what we learn will change.” Many countries are taking precautions to prevent swine flu crossing their borders. However, it is almost impossible to stop the virus entering a country via airplane or ship passengers. The outbreak could be bad for the world’s economy, especially the airline industry. Many would-be travellers are cancelling their travel plans and staying at home.

Answer these questions with full sentences:

1. How many people have died so far in Mexico?
2. What other counties have reported outbreaks of the virus?
3. Is there a vaccine against it?
4. What is Dr. Besser´s warning about the virus?
5. What could be the consequences of the outbreak of the virus?

St. Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, etc. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th-century America was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Activity number 1: Write to me and answer these questions:
1. How do people in the West celebrate St. Valentine's Day?
2. What did Esther Howland do about Valentine's day?
3. Who buys more cards in the U.S.A., men or women?

Activity number 2: Write a love letter of at least 50 words, for you "boyfriend" or "girlfriend", imaginary or not.
